NYE Traditions: “Dinner for One”

Dinner for One is an 18 minute comedy sketch in English that was recorded by a German TV station in 1963 and is broadcast annually at 11:30pm on New Year’s Eve in Austria. The plot involves an upper-class Englishwoman who hosts a dinner party for her friends every year on her birthday. She has now outlived them all, but continues to celebrate while pretending her friends are alive and seated round the table. Her aged manservant aids the tradition by impersonating the guests and making frequent toasts on their behalf. The sketch is considered somewhat of a cult classic leading fans to copy the meal and associated events. The skit popularized the phrase “same procedure as every year” and it is often quoted in the media or in advertisements. Netflix created a parody that replaced the guests with characters from Netflix shows.
